There’s something special about breathing new life into a vintage marine engine—especially when it’s a piece of maritime history like the Volvo Penta MD2.

Recently, I had the pleasure of completely rebuilding and restoring one of these classic two-cylinder diesel engines for installation in a beautifully crafted Norwegian-built wooden sloop.

This project was a true labour of love, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern precision engineering.

A Brief History of the Volvo Penta MD2

The Volvo Penta MD2 was introduced in the early 1960s as a rugged and reliable marine diesel engine. Designed for small to mid-sized sailing and motor yachts, the MD2 was renowned for its durability, simplicity, and ability to run for decades with proper maintenance.

With a displacement of 0.8 litres and an output of around 15 horsepower , the MD2 was a solid choice for sailors who needed dependable power. Featuring direct injection , thermosiphon cooling , and a robust cast-iron block , this engine was built to last. Many MD2s are still in service today, a testament to Volvo Penta’s engineering quality. However, after decades of operation, even the best engines require a complete overhaul—and that’s where our expertise came in.

The Restoration Process: Bringing the MD2 Back to Life

1. Initial Assessment and Disassembly

When this particular MD2 arrived in our workshop, it showed all the classic signs of wear: corrosion, internal sludge buildup, and worn-out components. The first step was a full disassembly to assess the condition of each part. We discovered:

Heavily worn piston rings
Corroded cylinder liners
A leaking water pump
Electrical components in need of replacement
A fuel injection system that needed recalibration

2. Engine Block Restoration

Once all components were refurbished or replaced, we meticulously reassembled the engine. Every bolt was torqued to factory specifications, and all moving parts were lubricated to ensure smooth operation. After a thorough bench test, the MD2 roared to life, running smoothly and efficiently—ready to power its next adventure.

Steve's Mobile Boat Service recently embarked on a challenging yet rewarding restoration project, breathing new life into a 1940s era Waternet inspection boat.

The vessel, salvaged from the depths of the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam, arrived at the boatyard of Museum 't Kromhout in a dire state, resembling nothing short of scrap. However, with meticulous attention to detail and technical expertise, our team undertook the task of transforming this relic into a seaworthy marvel.

Initial Assessment and Preparation:

Upon arrival at the boatyard, the first step was to carefully assess the extent of the damage and formulate a comprehensive restoration plan. The boat, measuring a modest 3.0 meters and originally intended for human-powered operation, presented a host of challenges. Its hull bore the scars of its underwater ordeal, with holes and structural weaknesses requiring immediate attention.

Restoration Process:

The restoration process commenced with the delicate task of floating the boat and hauling it out of the water for closer inspection. Once on dry land, our team meticulously stripped away layers of old paint, exposing the underlying surfaces for restoration. Sanding and meticulous surface preparation followed, ensuring a pristine foundation for the subsequent stages of the restoration.

Repair and Reinforcement:

Addressing the boat's structural integrity was paramount to its revival. Fast forward to a serene afternoon in Amsterdam, and the echoes of that legacy resonate in the form of 'Anna', powered by a Lister Petter engine born 62 years after the company's inception.

When Anna's engine fell silent, her distressed owner reached out to Steve's Mobile Boat Service. Upon inspection, the diagnosis was clear – the starter motor had reached the end of its journey. However, this was not the only hurdle; a deeper investigation revealed that Anna's alternator had also succumbed to the passage of time, failing in its duty to replenish the battery.
